Townsend Inlet is the waterway between the barrier islands of Seven
Mile Beach (to its south) and Ludlam Island (to its north). Unlike Corson
Inlet, this inlet has been stabilized by jetties. Though the jetties
temporarily help prevent sand deposition, Townsend Inlet has been dredged
several times.
The shoreline on the southern part of the inlet has undergone rapid
erosion. Houses are protected by a low rock bulkhead. A series of groins
futilely protects the inlet beach. In contrast, the beach on the northern
side of the inlet is growing.
