Avon By the Sea is a popular hub of all kinds of seaside activities.
Fishing and diving boats traffic the Shark River Inlet, and vacationers
enjoy the white sandy beaches and Victorian atmosphere.
However, most visitors fail to realize that the haphazard groins hardly
help to conserve the beaches. The inlet jetties block sand transport
from reaching more northern beaches. The first two pictures below show
how sand has accreted along the southern jetty. On the northern side
of the jetty (the third picture), the beach has been starved of sand
and is very narrow.
