The Barnegat Lighthouse can be found at the northern tip of Long Beach
Island. A climb to the top of the lighthouse is rewarded with a spectacular
panoramic view of the inlet and the Sedge Islands located on the northern
side of the inlet.
Like all inlets in New Jersey, the Barnegat Inlet has a tendency to
become choked with sand. Jetties have been built to stabilize the ever
changing inlet. Maintenance dredging is frequently required. The sand
on the right of the jetty in the first picture is dredged material from
a beach nourishment project in 1979. The jetty was likely constructed
as an afterthought in order to prevent the sand from migrating back
into the inlet.
Cement walkways lead tourists to the end of the southern jetty.
