Holgate

Holgate is located on the southern end of Long Beach Island, opposite the Barnegat Lighthouse. The beach here is very different from the beach at Barnegat Inlet. Erosion is a major problem on these beaches. Haphazard groins and bulkheads zig-zag along the shoreline offering very little protection to the beach. Sand accumulation and erosion is apparent on opposite sides of the groins.

Holgate beaches are open to off-road vehicles which may cause further damage to an already fragile shorefront. Vehicle traffic disturbs dune stability and grass growth by breaking up the salt crust that binds sand together. In addition, drivers often ignore signs that designate off limit areas.
