IMCS Rutgers

The Institue of Marine and Coastal Sciences, or IMCS, is affiliated with Rutgers University. The Marine Field Station in Tuckerton is located in the Mullica River-Great Bay estuary.

Estuaries are calm, shallow areas where freshwater from rivers mix with saltwater of the sea. These specialized areas are nutrient rich and protected from most marine predators. As a result, estuaries are very good fish nursuries.

Most of the scientists and students at IMCS currently focus their research on the life history and ecology of fishes and their estuarine habitats. Understanding the life history of fish and their habitats will help improve our ability to manage fish resources in the Mid-Atlantic Area.
