Steinaker Dam was created as part of a large water management project known as the Central Utah Project. Dam construction began in 1959 and was completed in 1962. The dam holds back 37,000 acre-feet of water. The water from the dam is used to irrigate 15,000 acres of farmland in the region.

The land around the reservoir makes up Steinaker State Park. The park is 2,283 acres in total area and is located at an elevation of 5,500 feet above sea level.
