Drive Through the Ages
Navajo Formation

40 34' 50 N
109 28' 23 W

The Navajo Formation was deposited about 180 million years ago. Prior to the layer being deposited, the area was covered with large sand dunes. The dunes have been cemented together over millions of years by silica and lime. The hardening of the dunes maintained the visual layers of the rock beneath the Navajo Formation. Archeologists have found dinosaur prints in the surface of the sands in certain areas.
