Phosphate Mine Overlook

The phosphate mine pictured below is located 11 miles north of the town of Vernal, in Uintah County, Utah. It is owned and operated by the SF Phosphate Ltd's Vernal Phosphate Operation. Each year 2.5 million tons of phosphate ore is mined at this site. The ore is transported to a fertilizer plant in Wyoming where it is mixed with sulfuric acid. The products of the mixture of sulfuric acid and phosphorus are phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. The phosphoric acid is sold as a fertilizer and the phosphogypsum is treated as a waste product.
