The Strawberry Reservoir and the Soldier Creek Dam were created as part of a
large water management project known as the Central Utah Project. The purpose of
this project was to store and distribute water from the Colorado River Basin to
the southern region of Utah.
The Strawberry Reservoir was a small storage area for water before the Central
Utah Project was developed. In 1971, as part of the project, the Soldier Creek
Dam was built seven miles downstream from Strawberry Dam. The new dam increased
the size of the reservoir four times. This major increase in the amount of water
that could be stored and managed in the Strawberry Reservoir after the new dam
was built made a big difference for the water supply in Utah.
