Grand Staircase National Monument includes 1.9 million acres of land.
The monument is a spectacular geologic timeline displaying over 270
million years of history. As you travel from South to North through
the Monument you can view the rock formations from oldest to youngest.
The Kailab uplift of the Moenkopi Formation is the oldest exposed layer.
The Kailab Formation of Grand Staircase National Monument is the same
elevation as the high area of the Grand Canyon. The youngest rock in
the Grand Staircase is the Paunsaugunt Plateau of the Claron Formation.
This section of the staircase extends into Bryce Canyon National Park
and Dixie National Forest.
