Zion National Park is best known for Zion Canyon. Walls of Navajo sandstone
tower 2,000 feet above the canyon floor. The rock was originally pushed
up as a result of the Hurricane Fault.
Severe downward cutting and erosion by the strong waters of the Virgin
River created the massive canyons walls.
Today the Virgin River is a small, calm river. However it was once
raging and fierce enough to cut through the Navajo sandstone formations
to create spectacular cliffs.
