Monitor and Merrimac Buttes

38 38' 46 N
109 44' 08 W

Monitor and Merrimac Buttes were named after Civil War battleships. They were formed from Entrada Sandstone.

Buttes are formed as a result of the continued erosion of tabletop-like mesas. Erosion reduces the size of the mesa until it is a jagged brick of rock.
