About Hydrangeas
What is special about the species Hydrangea macrophylla?
Hydrangeas are perennials, meaning they return year after year. As
with many things, there is a large variety of hydrangeas. The most common
hydrangea is the Hydrangea macrophylla, which are the big leafy
hydrangea shrubs with flower clusters. What is interesting to note about
this species of hydrangea is its ability to change the color of its
flowers, ranging from pink to blue. For now, we will focus on a specific
species of hydrangeas, Hydrangea macrophylla.
Potting hydrangeas is the easiest way to control the color of the flowers
that bloom. They prefer well-drained, moist soil with partial sunlight.
The soil should be enriched with minerals and nutrients. These may encourages
a specific color, that will be discussed later in Changing
Colors. Hydrangeas begin blooming once they reach a foot high and
can grow up to 3 to 6 feet tall! But they rarely grow that big, especially
if grown indoors.
