Tropical Savanna (Tropical Grasslands)

Did You Know?

  • Savannas grow where temperatures are relatively high all year round and rainfall occurs seasonally.
  • At the onset of the rainy season, changes in the landscape go from dull brown to bright green.
  • The most magnificent inhabitants of the African grassland savannas are hooved mammals like zebras, gnus (wildebeest), antelopes and giraffes.
  • Predators include the cheetah, the lion, hyenas and jackals.
  • One of the most famous grasslands in the world is Africa's Serengeti Plains.
  • Three kinds of big, flightless birds are found in the tropical savanna on three different continents:  the rhea in South America, the ostrich in Africa and the emu in Australia.
