Litter bugs can make a community look ugly and dirty as well as causing some problems for wildlife. Some materials, such as plastics and synthetics can take a long time to degrade in the environment and they can clog up sewers, streams and rivers.

There are few uglier sites than seeing an otherwise beautiful landscape spoiled by litter and illegally dumped trash. There are far too many highways and streets lined with trash in Pennsylvania. The state's Adopt-A-Highway and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful programs have helped to clean up some of the mess. PennDOT and thousands of volunteers hit the streets to clean up other people's trash every year. Another program, called PA CleanWays was started by a family who was tired of seeing their neighborhood streets lined with litter. PA CleanWays brings together buisnesses, community members, municipalities and anyone who is interested in cleaning up their neighborhoods. They work to clean the streets, put up signs to educate people and warn them about the fines for littering in PA.
