1937 Clean Streams Law


  • Provided Pennsylvania with the authority to protect streams from pollution and the effects of surface mining.
  • Prohibits littering or dumping that effects the waters of the Commonwealth of PA and can fineup to $10,000 for offenses (littering is also regulated by the Fish and Boat Comission, PA Game Commission, Bureau of State Parks, and local authorities).

  • Created to protect endangered plants and animals.

  • Purpose is to reduce waste and recycle 25% of the total waste in PA.
  • Encourages composting.
  • Eliminates yard clippings in dumps.
  • Prevent pollution from the disposal of solid waste.

  • 1988 Hazardous Waste Cleanup Act
  • Funding for the cleanup of toxic waste sites and strenthens standards for new hazardous waste facilities.

  • To eliminate phosphate in laundry detergents from entering waterways ad causing eutrophication of surface waters.

  • Funding to protect and preserve farmland and open space, maintain parks, clean up abandoned mines, restore watersheds, and upgrade sewer systems.

  • Provides money to protect open space and critical habitats, conserve river resources, create greenways, build community parks and playgrounds, and enhance tourism.

    Agricultural Conservation and Easement Purchase Program
  • Allows farmers to place an easement on their land do that it will remain farmland and will not be developed.
