Using GIS to Explore Sprawl in the Lehigh River Watershed

Let's look for trends in population change in the Lehigh Valley watershed from 1990 to 2000 using a GIS map.

  • First, look at the "percentage change from 1990 - 2000" map color. Remember to view the legend to access the color key. What patterns do you see on this map? What regions of the watershed appear to be substantially increasing in population? What areas are not growing as fast?
  • Use the information tool to look for changes in the population in the city centers (Allentown, Easton, and Bethlehem) and the cities, towns, and other municipalities that surround them. Do you notice any trends? If so, what do you think is causing these trends? If you do not see any evident trends, how might you explain this?
