La Jolla

In Spanish, La Jolla means "The Jewel." It is an affluent community found 15 minutes from downtown San Diego.

La Jolla extends from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at its north to Bird Rock at its south. Its coastline follows the highly erosive alluvial cliffs. Alluvial cliffs are a kind of coastal bluff consisting mainly of sandstones and shales. These cliffs were formed by deposits of sand and gravel from ancient rivers and streams.

Tidepools are often home to a variety of intertidal marine life. Ocean water collects in the rocky hollow at low tide. The marine life that live in the tidepool must be able to survive the changes in the tides, temperature and salt concentrations. Most tidal pool creatures are invertebrates.
