Torrey Pines State Reserve

The park encompasses and area of 2000 acres that were set aside to protect Pinus torreyana, the rarest pine in North America. These remarkable pines grow on the sandy cliffs, suffer persistent drought, and endure severe storms and intense sunlight. Many trees grow in gnarled, twisted shapes as they survive in the harsh conditions.

Other types of vegetation and animals within the park are protected as well. The species that thrive in the reserve are adapted to a specific niche of extreme environmental parameters that include high salinity, much exposure to the sun, and high winds.
