Bowmanstown lowhead dam

The lowhead dam at Bowmanstown makes canoeing dangerous and forces recreational boaters to portage around the dam.

The canal was built through this area for the safe passage of packet boats. It was constructed twice through Bowmanstown. The first canal followed the bank of the river. The second canal followed the current Route 248. Later, Route 248 was built over the canal.
