The view from Egg Island Overlook provides a panorama of the Great
Salt Lake. This tremendous inland body of water provides life to the
flora and fauna of the region.
Plant species in the vicinity of the Great Salt Lake have adapted to
the hypersaline conditions. Species that adapt this way are considered
halophytic or salt adaptive. They are capable of withstanding periods
of flooding and drought, variations in soil and water salinity, extreme
heat and dryness during the summer and extreme cold during the winter.
Some of the halophytic species found in the Great Salt Lake region are
Alkali Dropseed, Four-Winged Saltbush, Greasewood, Inkweed, Iodine Bush,
Pickleweed, Salt Grass, and Shadscale. Many of these plants control
their salt intake by excreting salt through their leaf glands. They
often saturate the leaves, drop them, and regrow new ones to rid themselves
of excessive salt.
