Mauch Chunk (|Mmc)
Stratigraphic Column

Large Mauch Chunk exposure.

Location
The Mauch Chunk Formation is located above the Pocono Formation and immediately below the Pottsville Formation.

Description
Mauch Chunk Formation (|Mmc) is predominantly very fine to fine-grained and is grayish-red-purple and grayish-red in color. This formation is planar-bedded sandstone with some crossbedded sandstones.

A fair amount of disseminated calcite, some white limestone nodules 1/4 to 3 inches in diameter. Some discontinuous white limestone layers up to 2 inches thick are known to be contained in this formation as well. Also, some grayish-red massive to plannar-bedded siltstones and a minor amount of grayish-red shale also comprise the Mauch Chunk Formation.

This formation creates relatively smooth, eroded surfaces and commonly occupies valleys. The Mauch Chunk Formation has been calculated at around 500 feet thick.
