17 Mile Drive

This popular two laned road is one of the self-drive tours you can take in California. It is in Monterey and passes through the Del Monte Forest. A sightseer will pass groves of cypress trees, miles of rocky coastline and white sandy beaches. If you look out toward the ocean, you may see grey whales migrating. There are several marked places of interest along the road and paved parking for you to pull over and take in breath-taking views.

17 Mile Drive traces the perimeter of the Monterey Peninsula. The peninsula is made up of erosion-resistant granite. The coastal erosion rate is less than 1 inch per year. The hazards along this stretch of road are often due to wave thrown debris during storms.
