Rockaway Beach is a highly developed area that sits between Pacifica
to the north and Pedro Valley at its south. It is a low coastal area
backed by high rolling hills. The cliffs, which consist mostly of sedimentary
rock, offer little or no resistance to wave erosion. Slope failure,
resulting in erosion and landslides, is a major contributor to the coastal
hazards affecting numerous homes and businesses built on the cliffs.
Coastal erosion averages 39 inches of retreat per year.
Large storm waves and landslides destroyed a former railway grade
at the base of Rockaway Point. A seawall was constructed to protect
the most rapidly eroding part of the railway grade. Riprap was placed
along the low cliffs to protect private roads and property.
