San Francisco

The mammals that can be found in the San Francisco Bay area are seals and sea lions. These mammals are protected by law, and are often seen in protected bay areas.

According to the last census in 2000, the city is home to nearly 800,000 residents. San Francisco also lies a mere 5 miles east of the San Andreas Fault, an active earthquake zone. The bay and San Francisco Peninsula formed as a result of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates sliding against each other. This makes constructing a building tricky business in San Francisco. Buildings and homes require special engineering to withstand earthquake tremors. The location of such construction is also critical: flat areas next to the bay or at the base of a steep hill should be avoided since flooding and landslides are frequent.
