North Wildwood, Hereford Inlet

Inlets are naturally dynamic coastal areas. Changing currents and fluctuating tides continuously build and remove sand beaches. In efforts to control this constant coastal change, terminal groins and jetties have been built at Hereford Inlet.

Rock and cement rip rap help defend beach front property from further erosion and higher water. Exposed grassroots on small, isolated dunes show evidence of erosion. At low tide, the beach is very narrow. A storm during high tide may cause water to break onto the decks of nearby beach houses.
