The town of Stone Harbor occupies the southern half of Seven Mile Beach.
This area is one of the only remaining places in New Jersey that one
may view the natural relationship between the oceanside and the bayside
of a barrier island
On an undeveloped barrier island, the beach slopes gently and may
consist of a series of dune systems. Behind the dune hills grow shrubs
and other plants that can withstand extremely salty conditions. These
plants extend to the edge of the back-barrier marsh.
The low elevation of this area, and its narrowness make this area susceptible
to barrier island breaching. During a storm, wind and waves can flatten
dunes pushing sand and water toward the bay.
