The bayside of the lighthouse is much different from the oceanside. Since the Barnegat Inlet area is such a popular place to spend the summer people have bought or built homes on the flood prone marshlands. These homes may face flooding hazards during high tide and storm conditions. Furthermore, their location in the bay may threaten the habitats of nesting birds and other wildlife.
