Barnegat Lighthouse

Prior to the beach nourishment project in 1979, no houses existed east of the lighthouse. Following the project, the sand accumulated against the jetty rather than migrating southward as expected. As a result, developers began to build houses on the seemingly stable beach. Nevertheless, inlet areas are susceptible to dramatic erosion and accumulation cycles. It is not easy to predict what may happen to this man-made beach in the future.
